The distribution of different toxin types A ? D of Clostridium perfringens in a free ranging population of roe deer was studied. 260 faeces samples from roe deer were collected in three bordering hunting grounds in Brandenburg and Sachsen-Anhalt. Further soil and feed samples of the study area were investigated for the occurrence of Clostridium perfringens. The samples were collected in the winter of 2002 / 2003. From 260 collected faecal samples 62 were identified as Clostridium perfringens positive. 60 isolates were identified as type A and 2 as type D by using the ELISA technique. Also in feed and all soil samples Clostridium perfringens was found, but only type A. RAPD-analysis of selected isolates indicated a high genotypic variation among the tested strains. The investigations have shown that the etiological agent of Clostridium perfringens enterotoxaemia is present in the population of free ranging roe deer. However, predisposing factors have to be met for the disease to become clinically manifest.
