Abstract / Zusammenfassung

The results of this thesis clearly show that there is no uniform procedure for conducting reproductive toxicity studies that include postnatal functional and behavioural tests in rats. The studies concerned did not only differ in the selection and integration of specific functional and behavioural tests but also with regard to how these tests were performed. A preference for the use of specific test methods for the different categories could be observed. As a rule, all pups per litter were tested in investigations performed prior to weaning. Investigations conducted post-weaning almost exclusively tested one pair of pups per litter. In some of the studies, the development of specific functions was recorded over a certain period of time,however, this procedure was limited to the ontogony of reflexes as well as to the development of sensory functions. All studies considered, exclusively employed apical tests and the recorded effects were not qualified by way of more sophisticated investigations. Likewise, it was not determined whether the effects were of a transitory nature. No data on test system validation had been included in the analysed studies.
