Einleitung
The "3R principle" (Replacement, Refinement, Reduction), established in the 1950s, is a cornerstone in animal-based science. However, a 2018 study by Franco et al. [1]revealed that awareness of this principle might be less widespread than expected. The study, which surveyed 310 researchers from various scientific fields attending a Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) course across eight venues in four European countries, found that 42.3% were unaware of the 3R principle before the course, while 4.8% had heard of it but couldn't name the principles correctly. Post-course, 92.9% could accurately name the 3Rs, suggesting that education on the 3Rs needs enhancement among students and professionals.
Beschreibung
Webinars on the 3Rs offer an accessible way to learn about these principles and stay updated on scientific advancements. The increasing availability of these webinars reflects their growing importance. The Berlin 3R Open Access Online Seminar, organized by the Free University of Berlin's Institute of Animal Welfare, Animal Behavior, and Laboratory Science since 2016, exemplifies this trend. This seminar series covers a broad range of topics within the 3Rs.
In 2023, each session attracted 800-900 participants from European and non-European nations, indicating high interest and the need for such educational opportunities. A participant survey (n=82) which we aim to present, revealed that over 20% lacked extensive knowledge of the seminar topics beforehand. Satisfaction with the seminar was over 80%, and 75% of participants expressed interest in further training. Additionally, 71% believed the knowledge gained could be applied in their work, up from 55% in an earlier report by Hohlbaum et al [2].
Schlussfolgerung
These findings suggest a growing practical application and awareness of the 3Rs. The substantial number of suggested topics in the survey highlights the ongoing demand for informative events on the 3Rs. There is also significant interest in topics like refinement in farm animals, optimizing breeding practices, and ethical discussions regarding experimental animals. These insights underscore the importance of continued education and the role of the Berlin 3R Online Seminar in promoting responsible research that addresses animal welfare concerns.
AnerkennungWe would like to thank all of the speakers, moderators, organizers and participants who made this seminar possible. Additionally, we would like to thank BB3R and the Einstein Centre 3R for their ongoing support.
