    Abstract / Zusammenfassung

Avian chlamydiosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci, is a systemic disease of turkeys, ducks, and chickens. It was also detected in most animal species and humans. The disease in turkeys is associated with severe respiratory manifestations and digestive disorders with high morbidity rates of 20% to 80% and mortality rates of 5% and 30%. A drop in egg production in turkey hens may reach up to 20%. Clinical signs such as swelling above the eyes due to nasal gland adenitis, characteristic of chlamydiosis in turkeys, could be the sole sign of the disease. Latent infections are common, and infected birds are potential reservoirs for C. psittaci for further birds and humans. Co-infection of C. psittaci and other avian pathogens, such as avian metapneumovirus and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, is common. Avian chlamydiosis is an occupational zoonotic disease characterized by serious pneumonia in veterinarians, workers, and pet shop owners. Diagnosis is based on using serology, culture, and/or PCR. Chlamydiosis can be treated with tetracyclines; however, the control is based on sound biosecurity to prevent the introduction and spread of the infection.
