    Abstract / Zusammenfassung

    Osteoarthritis (OA) continues to be one of the commonest causes of equine lameness and is the subject of intensive ongoing research. Although several therapeutic approaches have been proven to be beneficial in the treatment of OA, intra-articular therapy remains one of the most effective treatment options. Current scientific literature contains various details regarding effectiveness, dosage and mechanism of action of the most frequently used joint medications. Evidence-based medicine (EbM) is the judicious use of the current best available scientific research in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating one s individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research. The objective of this research is to identify the clinically relevant information about common intra-articular joint medications such as corticosteroids, hyaluronan and poly-sulfated glycosaminoglycan, based on a review of current in vitro- and in vivo studies.
