Blood values in the European bison (Bison bonasus) in relation to sex, age and alanoposthitis in bulls
Objective:
Blood values are an important tool for the diagnosis of diseases in pets, zoo- and wild animals. The aim of this study was to obtain reliable haematological reference
values for the European bison (Bison bonasus). The blood reference values from healthy animals were compared with those from bison with balanoposthitis. Material and methods: Blood samples were taken from the Vena jugularis of 170 healthy European bison and 52 with balanoposthitis. 179 of these animals were free living and 43 kept in the breeding reserve of the Bialowieza National Park (Poland) or in different zoos in Germany. The latter were immobilized before samples were taken. The following parameters were examined: haematocrit, differential blood count, calcium, phosphor, aspartate-aminotransferase, creatine kinase, urea, creatinine and bilirubin.
Results:
Statistically significant differences between calves and adult animals were found
for the parameters creatinine and phosphor. No statistically relevant differences could be seen for the different genders. Furthermore, values of healthy males did not significantly
differ from values of bison suffering from balanoposthitis. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Beside a clinical examination reliable blood values are required in order to clarify the health status of European bison. Such values are presented in the following study. The results of clinical healthy animals and those of bison with balanoposthitis did not
show significant differences. This could mean that the balanoposthitis does not initiate a generalized immune response but rather a local response.
