Milking equipment is a major factor influencing udder health. A field trial was conducted to characterize the development of microbiological colonization in a newly installed milking parlour. The milking equipment was a 2 x 34 Side-by-Side milking parlour. Sterilized swabs were used to collect samples from the milking parlour before beginning of milking of a commercial dairy herd, and at weekly intervals for a period of 2 months. Samples were analysed from the mouthpiece of the liner, the shank of the liner and the flushing adapter, and were collected immediately after disinfection of the milking equipment. After sampling, the diagnostic material was kept in Amies medium at 4°C until analysis. Samples were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed according to official German guidelines for mesophilic aerobic total plate count, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, coliforms, streptococci, yeast and lactobacilli. Results indicated an increase in colonization of milking equipment with regards to bacterial species. Further research on the importance of these microorganisms in udder health is needed
