The application of the colony hybridization method enables for the first time the selective detection of Enterococcus faecium NCIB 10415 among total Enterococcus spp. counts of digesta and feces. This study confirms again, as shown in earlier studies with a Bacillus probiotic, that probiotic bacteria are transferred to the piglet from its mother sow by contact to feces before starter feed is available. Weaning seemed to induce a drastic impact on both total count of enterococci and E. faecium NCIB 10415, however specific CFU recovered and appeared to rearrange to a status similar to before weaning.
