Mammary tumors of the dog are a frequent disease inveterinary clinical practice. Due to their frequency but also due tothe often postulated parallels with human breast cancer, this typeof tumor is being researched intensively in comparison with otheranimal tumors.
The following article will give a brief overview of the currentstate of knowledge on the development, prognosis and therapy ofcanine mammary tumors. In particular, the article will give answersto the questions whether predisposing mutations are known as inhuman breast cancer, whether and at what time castration preventstumor development, how exactly the pathologist can provide theprognosis for these tumors and whether there are new forms oftherapy that address the current lack of therapy options for metastaticcanine mammary tumors. In addition, the article will also givea brief overview on the situation in the cat.
