Hypocalcemia is frequently described in the current literature as a gateway disease that predisposes the cow to various other diseases or health issues. Recent studies have investigated the potential of oral calcium applications around calving in order to prevent hypocalcemia. While the fi rst article compared oral calcium supplementation with intravenous calcium supplementation the other two articles focused on subpopulations that particularly benefi t from oral calcium supplementation and the economic impact of this preventive strategy. The articles were summarized, their quality was evaluated with the formerly introduced checklist by Arlt et al. (2017). Finally, a short conclusion was drawn that can be applied in daily veterinary practice.
