    Impact of zinc oxide on the immediate postweaning colonization of enterobacteria in pigs (2016)

    Abstract / Zusammenfassung

    This study was conducted to investigate the impact of dietary zinc oxide on the immediate postweaning development of enterobacteria in pigs. Twenty piglets were weaned at 26 d of age and fed diets containing 155 or 3,167 mg∙kg−1 zinc from feed grade zinc oxide and 164 or 343 mg∙kg−1 zinc from a commercial zinc oxide preparation. Daily fecal samples were used for DNA extraction and detection of total enterobacteria, the Escherichia group, and E. coli pathogenic factors via PCR assays. This study showed an immediate effect of dietary zinc oxide on enterobacteria and E. coli pathogenic factors from 3 to 4 d until 8 to 10 d after weaning. Comparison of a commercial product with conventional feed grade ZnO showed that the commercial product can be used at lower inclusion rates to yield results similar those for high concentrations of the standard ZnO.
