Abstract / Zusammenfassung

The introductory part of the work presented here deals with the relationship between the veterinary surgeon and the protection of animals in general. Furthermore, not only are the contemporary socio-political consequences of the problem of animal protection discussed, but also the ethical and legal principles as well as the historic-political background of the German Animal Protection Lav (TierSchG) are explained and a survey on attempts made to harmonize legislation with respect to animal protection at European level are given.Against the background of the passing of the Animal Protection Lav on 18.8.1986, the modifications proposed by pressure groupsoutside parliament, the bills, the comments of the Bundesrat (Federal Council) and the Bundesregierung (Federal rovernment) as weil as those of the Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament) ccncerning the amendment of the Animal Protection Lav of 1972 are presented.This is followed by an investigation into how far the suggestions and impulses are reflected by the Animal Protection Lav of 1986 es well es by an evaluation of the facts in the light of their relevance to veterinary surgery. In the discussion the most important, new aspects of the law es they affect veterinary surgeons are summerized and an attempt is made to evaluate the Animal Protection Law of .1985 with regard to prospective developments
