    Abstract / Zusammenfassung

    The first part of this publication discusses the requirements of the Animal Protection Act of the Federal Republic of Germany regarding test projects which are subject to authorization and/or notification, and surgery and treatment of animals for basic, advanced or specialized training.This is followed by a description of the EUROPEAN CONVENTION and the GUIDELINE FROM THE COUNCIL ON APPROXIMATING THE LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATIONS OF THE MEMBER NATIONS FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS USED FOR EXPERIMENTAL AND OTHER SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES, as well as the pertinent legal provisions of Austria, Belgium, Swizzerland, Denmark, France, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden.Statistical surveys in the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Swizzerland of the implementation of test projects provide information regarding the use of test animals in different areas of research.The OWN REVIEWS represent first, the development of a special questionnaire for the test projects registered_ during the period 1986 to 1988 at the Free University of Berlin, the periodof investigation, data collection and encryption, and the evaluation procedure. The results contain information on the quantity of data, the characterization of he projects, the decisions by public agencies, the used test animals, and the type of treatment and surgery. The concluding discussion makes a comparison of the results with other findings from literature and proposals for future courses of action in collecting and assessing pertinent data from universities.
