This study was performed to give first insight into the effects of a single bout of exercise under field conditions on serum myeloperoxidase-activity (MPOa) in Standardbreds over a time interval of 48h. Myeloperoxidase is an interesting parameter for the activity of leucocytes. Additionally malondialdehyde (MDA) as a parameter for oxidative stress in lipids was likewise evaluated. Blood samples were obtained from 20 trained Standardbreds before exercise (T0), and at 5min (T5min), 4h (T4h), 24h (T24h) and 48h (T48h) after exercise. Serum MPOa, MDA, and common hematologic parameters were measured. Heart rate, locomotory speed, distance and exercise duration were continuously recorded during exercise. Exercise induced a significant increase in median values of serum MPOa with highest values at T5min, whereas the median of MPOa decreased to resting values at T24h. Mean serum MDA values also increased significantly at T5min. Most hematologic parameters were significantly (p<0.05) affected by exercise. Results indicate that exercise influences median serum MPOa values. A contribution of MPO to the development of exercise-induced oxidative stress in lipids could not be demonstrated by formation of serum MDA.
