Abstract / Zusammenfassung

Str. suis, particularly serotype 1 is the most common cause for enzootic polyarthritis in piglets. It is assumed that latent infected sows infect her newborns already during farrowing or by colostrum. In most cases piglets are infected via navel or via lesions by routine zootechnical interventions during 1st week. Some piglets die due to septicaemia before clinical manifestation of arthritis.
The purpose of the clinical study in a farrow to wean unit with polyarthritis caused by Str. suis type 1 was to prove efficiency of the long acting antibiotic substance ceftiofur crystalline free acid (Naxcel) with special regard to time of application.
