Bioaerosols comprise different particles of biological origin which may affect humans and animals through infectivity, allergenicity, inflammatory or other processes. The inflammatory response produced by exposure to bioaerosols can trigger diseases like the Organic Dust Toxic Syndrome or the chronic bronchitis. Currently risk assessment to these diseases is mainly based on the determination of airborne endotoxin concentration by using the Limulus assay. However, the Limulus assay is limited to the detection of endotoxins and may not reflect the pathogenicity of endotoxins for mammals. Therefore alternatives to the Limulus assay like cell culture and whole blood models are examined. Here, a model is presented which characterize the inflammatory potential of bioaerosols by using the cytokine response in human whole blood.
