Six EU countries were involved in this study between April 1996 and April 1999. Prevalence of Salmonella was examined in fattening, breeding and farrow-to-feeder herds. Risk factors of introducing Salmonella on farms were also assessed (Part 1). Sources of contamination of pork were evaluated in meat product samples and in environment in abattoirs (Part 2). 60 fattening, 20 breeding and 20 farrow-to-feeder herds were examined in Schleswig-Holstein province. The investigation included bacteriological examinations of feed and faecal samples for sero- and phage-typing and serological examinations using Danish Mix-ELISA. 213 of 2947 fattening pigs (7.3%), 73 of 797 breeding sows (9.2%) and 18 of 399 pigs in farrow-to-feeder herds were serological positive. 28.3% of the fattening, 50% of the breeding and 15% of the farrow-to-feeder herds were serological positive. Common risk factor for Salmonella infection in fattening herds and sow herds was the use of pelleted feed. However, a control study with 17 different fattening herds failed to confirm this observation obtained by means of a questionnaire.
