Distribution of Salmonella in German abattoirs was examined in 1997. Of 1200 swab samples from slaughtered pigs and water samples from abattoir, 53 (4.4%) were positive for Salmonella. Commonest isolate was S. typhimurium (69.8%), and 6 phage types were differentiated. In addition, S. derby and S. panama could be demonstrated. The phage type DT 104 was resistant to ampicillin, spectinomycin, streptomycin, sulfonamide and tetracycline. In comparison with the serological prevalence of 7.3% of fattening pigs (Part 1), only 1.0% of samples from the surface of carcass were positive. 2.7% of swabs from the liver and 5.3% of swabs from the tongue were positive. Of environmental samples, Salmonella was mainly demonstrated in water outlets, but not in water samples from scalding tanks. Salmonella was isolated from the hands of personnel and polishing machine only in one case each
