Abstract / Zusammenfassung

Regarding the current relevance of atypical myopathy in Germany (particularly in the northern part of Germany) the present publication summarises current published data of this condition and complements them with clinical, laboratory and, in most cases, pathohistological findings of 10 cases of atypical myopathy presented to the Equine Clinic, School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, in autumn and winter 2004. Weather conditions of the recent autumn were similar to those observed in 1995/1996 and during both periods, cumulative cases of atypical myopathy occurred. Consequently, we can substantiate the thesis that the appearance of clinical signs seems to be triggered by specific weather conditions. The aetiology of atypical myopathy remains unknown. It is assumed that it is caused by an ingested or enterically produced toxin, with its production being triggered by specific weather conditions. The diagnosis is confirmed by laboratory findings, with the serum muscle enzymes activities (particularly creatinine) being increased. At present, only a symptomatic treatment with a very guarded prognosis can be recommended.
