This case report deals with a 12-week-old sheep lamb, presented with acute dyspnoe, which underwent a full cardiological examination because of a machinery murmur audible during auscultation. The chest x-ray showed a massive cardiomegaly and a moderate pulmonary edema. In the ECG, sinus tachycardia, prolonged P-waves and increased amplitudes for P-parallel to, R-parallel to- and Q(parallel to) were detectable. Echocardio-graphically a massive dilatation of both ventricles, atria and the A. pulmonalis was visible. The atrial septum bulged out into the right atrium and had a central located defect. A persistent ductus arteriosus could not be proven by ultrasonography. The pathological examination showed an atrial septum defect with a big aneurysmatic membrane and a wide patent ductus arteriosus.
